Quick Apps Installation on New Windows PC

Do you want to know how to install apps on your new Windows PC without wasting your time? There are a few ways to do this. We will talk about one of them. This is a working way that was checked by us. But if you have your own, please share it in the comments.

We use several apps every day. We also keep dozens of them on our PC. Some of them we open for work, others for pleasure. Apps became an essential part of our lives. And some of them we barely notice, until we have to change our computer. When the pleasant feeling from the new purchase ends, we begin to think about the programs we have to install on this PC. There are only a few people who enjoy the long and boring process of waiting until all the apps are installed. Not many of us have enough time for this. Usually, we forget to download and install important apps and remember them only when there is no time to install. So, here is the way out for you.

The first thing to do

Safari browser logo

Of course, you have to get the browser at first. If you need apps on your new Windows, go for Safari, Edge, or another browser you use. Open Ninite for Windows apps or the macapps.link for macOS. These websites are gigantic libraries of apps. You can pick anything you want to install on your new device.

After you finished picking the apps, you have to get the custom installer for Ninite or Terminal command for macOS. This way, you don’t have to wait an eternity to get the apps on your device. Downloading them one by one is not an option if you need more than 3 apps. Now we have a Chocolatey package manager that helps with the problem.

Chocolatey – who?

This is an extremely easy to use program. And probably, this is the fastest way to install all the apps on your Windows PC. It may remind you of Ninite, but it supports more software. Created in 2011, this manager was made as an ultimate tool for Windows.

Installing Chocolatey

This is the first step on the way to easy apps installation. For now, you have to install the Chocolatey. After that, you can run it on your device. Open the Windows Start menu and search for a word “Command” there. Once you find the Command Prompt, right-click with your mouse and open the list with services. Now select the option “Run as Administrator”.

If you don’t want to waste your time, simply use right-click on the icon of the Start menu, and pick “Command Prompt (admin)”. If there are PowerShell instead, open a Command Prompt. Don’t worry, it will save time in the future.

When the Command Prompt appears, copy this text inside. Press Enter:

  • @”%SystemRoot%\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe” -NoProfile -InputFormat None -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -Command “iex ((New-Object System.Net.WebClient).DownloadString(‘https://chocolatey.org/install.ps1'))“ && SET “PATH=%PATH%;%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\chocolatey\bin”

There will be the text on your screen as the installation process begins. If everything goes smoothly, the last few lines will start with Ensuring. Check them and continue.

Install the apps via Chocolatey

Now you have to open a simple text document. It does not really matter where you do it. This document will be used for keeping the list of apps that you decided to install. Basically, it will be the commands for Chocolatey to install them. So, open the browser now.

This is probably the hardest part of the process. But you don’t have to repeat it after. Go to the app directory of Chocolatey and look for the apps you want to use on your new PC. Maybe you know them, but if not, look them up on your old PC or scan by the list of apps in Chocolatey.

Find the app you like and save it in your text file in such format:

  • choco install [name of package] –fy

The name must be the same that is written in the Chocolatey directory of apps. This “-fy” addition helps Chocolatey program to agree with you. It will say “yes” to anything that will appear during the installation process. As you can see this is not the ideal system, as sometimes you just have to say “no”, but it is the best way to install all the apps without wasting a few evenings or weekends. After all, you can check the terms of each app whenever you want.

Remember! You will have to write down every app you want to download in the same style. And each of these lines must be identical. Check all the lines before you start doing anything. If you don’t want to write down each line separately, place the names of the apps in one line, separated by spaces. But I recommend you to make lines, as they are more comfortable to check.

After all the apps are on your list, save the file and close it. Go to the folder with the file and press Rename.  Change the extension from .txt to .bat. Press Enter.

Right-click on this file. Choose “Run as administrator” from the menu. This will have to start the install process for all your apps in Chocolatey. That is actually it.

After the installation process of all the apps is over, save the file to the cloud. You can use your Google Drive, Dropbox or other storage to keep .bat file there. You are going to need it once you change the old system to the new one.

Extra Step that allows you to install everything with one file

You have probably read the article until this point and have a logical question: is it possible to do everything in only one step? Is there the possibility to install the Chocolatey manager and all the apps you need with the same .bat file? And the answer is yes, you are able to do this.

All you need is to open this .bat file that you have already created on the first stage and put there a text for Chocolatey installation you can see above. It must look similar to this, with different app names.

@”%SystemRoot%\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe” -NoProfile -InputFormat None -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -Command “iex ((New-Object System.Net.WebClient).DownloadString(‘https://chocolatey.org/install.ps1'))“ && SET “PATH=%PATH%;%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\chocolatey\bin”

choco install googlechrome –fy

choco install vlc –fy

choco install 7zip.install –fy

And so on. The number of apps you can add on the list is unlimited. You need to remember that the Chocolatey installation phrase must be one single sentence long. Don’t drop it.

Now, save the file and close it. You can do the same procedure we have discussed earlier. Do a right-click on the file and run it with the administrator’s rights. This way, you don’t even have to wait for Chocolatey manager to install. It sounds simple and looks even simpler. Just forget about a headache with all these apps that you have to download and run. This way, you can handle the situation faster than via the Ninite.

Auto or manual installer

Some users still prefer to do it the old-fashioned way. They are eager to download the apps and install them one by one. It is partly understandable. Sometimes you need to read the requests of the app and see what permissions you can grant and what not. The auto-installer will not be stopping on them and grant all the permissions automatically. So, if you are not ready to do this, prepare to spend some time installing apps.

What do you think about Chocolatey? Have you ever tried it? Don’t you agree that it is a lifesaver for busy people? If you have never tried this Windows manager before, you can use this guide and share your own feelings and tips about it.
